Pottsgrove Middle School’s Evacuation

This morning I saw a news truck heading out Hanover Street and I wondered where they were headed because we generally don’t see news trucks out our way.  Of course it wasn’t until this evening that I checked to find out the news that children were passing out in school.

About 2 dozen kids were transported to both PMMC and Phoenixville Hospital.  The children were standing in the school auditorium and three students passed out.  Next several other students started feeling faint.

The bad news is that it appears that parents were notified by social media outlets way before the school contacted them.  I’m sure it would frighten me if I found out on Facebook that my school was being evacuated and that almost 24 children were being sent to the hospital.

I saw that the administration said that the news outlets respond to 911 calls, and so news like that would cause a stir, but that didn’t mean that the administration was prepared to make a public statement on the matter.  This is a big concern, and I hope that schools take a look at how to more effectively and efficiently communicate a concern to parents without making them feel panicked.

Friday I’ll Be Married 28 Years!

I just told my husband that we’ve  been married a long time.  He laughed and said ” I don’t know, does it seem like a long time?”  That my friends, explains why we are still married!

I can and do say things that he doesn’t expect me to say, and most of the time he laughs and responds in a kind or pleasant way.  Sure, there were a few years that he didn’t talk to me at all, of course they weren’t all hooked together, or we wouldn’t still be married, but I’m thinking it is fair to say that we’ve argued for about 3 years in total out of almost 30.  That isn’t so bad is it?  90 percent of the time we get along swimmingly…and 10 percent of the time it is kind of well, let’s not even talk about it.

When I think of the young people we were when we got married, heck, we didn’t have a clue how long we were committing to.  Afterall, I was what?  Only 2 years old?  🙂

Okay, I was a little older, but I wasn’t as old as my marriage is old!  And the kick is we probably have more marriage ahead of us!  If I’m lucky I’ll be able to say “we’ve been married a long time” in another ten years, or another thirty years if I’m really lucky.

I guess my advice to young people who are thinking about long term commitment is ” Don’t worry about it, you are incapable of knowing how long your commitment is going to last.  Take it one day at a time, and you just might find yourself surprised someday, just like me, when you are trying to figure out how long you’ve been married!

Happy Anniversary to me!

Iris Folded Cards for the Holidays!

I am so lucky to know some really talented people; artists, crafters, foodies, spiritual advisers, you name it, there is a good chance I can hook you up  with someone!  But this holiday I am glad to mention my friend Pam.  She has been creating beautiful cards made by folding paper.

I know, everyone can fold paper, right?

Wrong!  I’m  telling you this isn’t your standard fold that she does, she takes a couple of sheets of card stock and creates magic. For example,  I’m looking at a red stocking she made with a tiny white ball on the toe and a feathery white top – the body of the stocking is at least 30 or 40 minute folds so that you have an almost 3-D design.

I also have a snowman made of white ribbon with a red ribbon scarf, hat and tiny black beads for his nose and mouth.  Is he cute or what?  Her Santa card is made of red grossgrain ribbon too, but he has 6 diamond like dots bordering his hat.  And my last card is an Angel, and she’s wearing a diamond necklace.  ( I don’t think Pam uses real diamonds, but they are awful  pretty no matter what they are.)

I know it is a little late to get holiday cards, but she makes personalized cards for any celebration or holiday.  If you feel like giving something special, her cards are only $2.50 each.  They come with an envelope and she says they only need a regular stamp.

Let me know if you want something, I’ll hook you up 🙂

Have a great night,

Death By Inhaling Helium!

First off, I’d like to say that I’m not a big helium inhaler partly because I was always worried about inhaling a gas no matter what it made me sound like.  But when I read about a woman from Delaware County who apparently is said to have committed suicide using helium, I freaked out.  Kids think it’s the funniest thing in the world to inhale that stuff, and I’m sure a few adults have done it for fun themselves.  So to hear that you can kill yourself by inhaling it is scary.

I’m no expert, but I think the gas is dangerous in humans for a couple of reasons.  One of the reasons is that it can pass through the blood stream to the brain.  Who wants a stroke because they inhaled helium to sound like a native of Oz?

The second problem with inhaling it is that it confuses the energy system in the blood stream.  Your organs require oxygen to operate right?  Well, strangely, our bodies don’t recognize that we are low on oxygen.  I know that sounds incredibly wrong, but it’s true, instead we recognize too much Carbon dioxide?   But this gas, helium, makes us think we are okay by faking our systems into believing we aren’t suffering from a lack of oxygen.  You could die simply by not getting enough oxygen, and it’s horrible, but some people must be buying kits with helium so that they can commit suicide.

Yes, I said using helium to suicide is horrible.  I’m sure there are arguments for people wanting to make their own choices about death, but sticking a plastic hood on your head to inhale a gas seems kind of sad doesn’t it?  Well, it does to me.

I’m sure dying from helium inhalation is an oddity, or at least I hope it is, but look, what is the point of even inhaling it?  It doesn’t make you feel any different, unless you inhale too much that is.  It is just a game to make your voice sound funny.  Just don’t do it, and gently remind other people that it’s potentially dangerous.

What do you say?

Secret Shuttle Launched Today!

I found it interesting reading about the secret shuttle that NASA launched this afternoon.  It is fascinating trying to figure out what it’s purpose is.

Apparently it is being launched into a lower orbit than some other communications satellites.  I thought that might be an indication of what it’s objective is.  Perhaps that is just where this shuttle tends to hover over the Earth, but if it is rotating around the planet at a slightly lower altitude than LEO satellites then, from what I’ve read before, it has the ability to “snoop” on conversations that are sent to communication satellites.  And in addition, any scrambled information is captured before it gets to the satellite to be sent out in chunks.

Sooner, or later I can imagine that there will be rules for these secret missions, but in the meantime I’m sort of glad, even though I know it isn’t exactly fair, I’m glad that we have the technology to engage in this kind of project.

Space is cool.

Facebook Troubles?

How is your Facebook?  Can you access it?  Do you have pics still?  There seems to have been a glitch today and I have no idea why it happened, or what they are doing about it, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this event tomorrow.

Just know that if your facebook account is screwy, then you aren’t alone.

Aldi’s Stop Today!

Is milk really over 4 bucks a gallon?  That is what I paid for it over at Aldi’s today.  I also got bread, hot dog rolls, a dozen eggs and some meat and it came to almost 30 dollars!  Blah!

The meat I got was hamburger which I turned into meatballs for spaghetti dinner tonight.  It wasn’t very exciting but it was filling.  Last night my daughter and I made an apple pie so that is for dessert later.

Tomorrow is probably going to be hot dogs and baked beans!  But recently I’ve made chili and chopped onions so that we’ve got some toppings for our hot dogs.

Last night I had some country style ribs that I got from Burt’s up at Zerns.  I popped them into the slow cooker and added onions, garlic, celery a bottle of Yuengling and a half a jar of barbecue sauce. Cook it for a couple of hours, or until you slice the meat and find it shreds easily.  It was kind of tasty. I even made my family eat yams with it!  They didn’t mind because the meal was already kind of sweet and zesty.

Wednesday is probably going to be some kind of chicken dish with noodles, and then on Thursday we’ll do tacos and  and rice.

So even though life is getting expensive, and I’ll probably need another gallon of milk, the good news is we’ll eat for a week on about 40 bucks.  Of course that is only because I have breakfast foods and lunch makings on hand.  If I didn’t have them, then my week of food would certainly cost more, but honestly since one night’s meal at a fast food restaurant costs what I’m paying for a week of food then I think it is so much better to make it at home myself…even though I don’t feel that way when I’m mixing and popping things into the oven.  It seems easier to just buy a bag of food on the way home, but I know it isn’t.  How many times have I scarfed down a meal from a fast food joint without even noticing I ate anything?  Whereas when I make a meal, my family sits down and eats together.

Oh, by the way, Pottstown’s Hometown  Coupon Magazine has a coupon for Burts Farms and you can check them out at http://www.burtsmeats.com
