Tonight’s Temperature? A Low of Three!

Zoiks!  I have so had enough of this winter!

I hate winter, I hate snow, I hate cold.

Apparently though, it doesn’t matter!  The cold will continue through this evening despite my protestations.

Try to stay safe and warm folks.  Watch out for that black ice.  Be prepared to go slow through intersection with stop lights because sometimes the cold messes with their proper functioning.

Just be safe okay?  Bundle up, put on some sweaters and fuzzy socks.  Wear a hat if you have to.  Drink water so you don’t dehydrate because our bodies might be working a little harder than usual to maintain our regular temperatures,  and  please don’t go outside for extended periods unless you have to and you are protected from the weather.







I wish I could settle the angst in the Ukraine with the wave of a wand.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like wand waving is going to help the conflict that is going on there.  Yanakovych who was their democratically elected president agreed to continue trade with Russia which probably made Russia happy, but many people in the country objected to that relationship because they preferred more of an alignment with the EU.

One of the problems seems to be that Ukraine is already doing a large part of it’s trading with Russia and countries like Turkey.  While  residents of Ukraine want better jobs, better living conditions and “better trade opportunities” we have to remember that the EU has been going through some financial setbacks just like we have here in the US.  It isn’t likely that members of the EU will embrace all the Ukrainians that would want jobs and business from EU member states.  So there is a mess.  Russia is very interested in Ukrainian pipe lines for energy, and while I’m sure the EU would like to exert some control over those same energy lines…Russia is already there and active in the region.  So when we hear that Russia has sent armed men to the Ukraine 8 planes and they’ve “borrowed airports”…the Russians believe that they are protecting rights that they’ve already received commitments on.  According to their point of view they are following the letter of the law.

While John McCain is saying ” We are all Ukrainians” or something very much like that the truth is the US doesn’t have a lot of power or control over this situation.  The countries surrounding the Ukraine really need to come forward first and make strong statements first.  Until that happens, I would hope that the US doesn’t engage in any conflict with Russia.

It is incredibly sad that there have been deaths over this.  It’s horrible. I don’t want to say “only 12 people have died and less than a hundred have been injured” because there shouldn’t be death over political protests.  There often has been throughout history, but it’s wrong!   Still, reason must prevail.  We can’t sink into something like a world war because Ukrainians disagree with their former/current leader.  ( I wrote it that way because he says he’s still the leader,  of course he’s saying that at a Russian press conference.)

I’m just a simple person reading through the global news.  I had a really hard time looking at one news photo…it showed a candle glowing behind a picture of a protesters face.  The image was part of a luminary display.  The pictures are of people who are now dead.

It’s too sad.



Educated Readers Please?!

When I ask for educated readers I’m not asking  for people with a particular degree of intelligence, no, what I want is people to go find their own information based on facts I drag back here for them.  I want that for a couple of reasons…first, I want it because I’m not a specialist in any of the things I think about. I am an average Jane.  I am not diagnosing, or recommending treatment for anyone.  If I talk about something and it touches a nerve or an interest in you I hope you’ll go and search for more information.  I don’t want the responsibility!  I love my readers but I’m not taking any responsibility for you all 🙂

Secondly, I’m a little lazy.  I do not link where I should, and I don’t worry about writing according to the MLA.  I just type.  This isn’t a well edited journal.  It’s my thought space.  So I really do love my readers and I’m really glad you’ve come to visit me here, but I’m writing here after reading the news that interests me.  I can tell you where I go for science news, or news about health, or news about the world, but you’d have to ask me for it cause it’s not my job to tell you everything!  I have a job.

I like thinking about things.  I don’t have an agenda as far as I’m aware.  I see things and drag them back here.  Sometimes I’m lucky enough to have a critical reader who catches me, or who questions something I say.  I actually enjoy that.

More Health Stuff :)

Over at AOL today they are talking about a “condiment” that can help lose belly fat.  Well, when you read the article you’ll find that the condiment they are talking about is apple cider vinegar, which isn’t something I put on my food most of the time.  So while I wouldn’t exactly call it a condiment, I do have to admit I have a bottle in my refrigerator that I bought at a whole foods store and I bought it from there because I wanted something called the “mother” in it.

What is the mother? Well, it’s a bit of the fermented apple.  It hasn’t been removed to make it nice and see through.  I do actually ingest this stuff, although not as often as I probably should because according to the study over at AOL researchers found that adding a bit to the diet every day lowered blood glucose levels.  I like the sound of that.  There are however some cautions about adding apple cider vinegar to your diet. First it’s an acid- acetic acid, and it can burn your throat, or skin as you ingest it.  For most folks it won’t be a serious burn, just a little uncomfortable, but you don’t want to do that regularly because you don’t want to mess around with your nice esophagus!  What I do is pour two tablespoons into a glass of water and drink it. It isn’t all that bad in my opinion but I like things with a bit of a kick.

Next, a lot of folks have been worried about gluten.  Well, there are some folks saying that gluten isn’t just bothering our digestion systems, it also might be bothering our brains.  Check out something called zonolin.  I have to do more research on my own, but there might be a problem with a cascade in the body when it ingests too much sugar, or too  many carbohydrates.  Gluten is one of the things that we find in a lot of carbs.  So think about it.  Remember in the old days we talked about Wheat belly, now there is Grain Brain 🙂

Now I am unpleasantly plump, so please do not take my word for health behaviors that will result in a thin and comely YOU.  No, I can just pass along information that intrigues me.  I am heavier than I’d like to be and I try to diet regularly, but it doesn’t seem to take.  I know there are a lot of folks out there who will say calories in equals weight.  And folks like that are welcome to doubt my sincerity when I say that there has to be something else that keeps the weight on me because I try not to overindulge.

So now that you know that I’m not talking down to anyone,  I am seriously thinking about this stuff, and this is the last thing that interests me, I was thinking the other day about the temperature in our environments these days. In the old days people were a lot less toasty in my opinion.  I can’t tell you how many times I  read something that talks about way back when folks were outdoors in the cold, or how they slept in chilly rooms with windows open year round?  These days we are locked into our temperature controlled spaces and that made me wonder if there was any possibility that temperature had an impact on weight?

Turns out there was a study done recently about how room temps affect humans.  Warmer temperatures, warm, not hot, increase body weight. Well, in truth there were several that I saw.

What was really fascinating to me was that the longer humans are in cold temperatures, the more they accommodate themselves to them.  If you spend a couple of weeks at 59 degrees, your body will think that is a comfortable temperature to live at.  IT makes a lot of sense to me, because I notice that I can be outdoors on a warm winter afternoon and barely feel the chill at 52 degrees, and yet, I am sure that physiologically my body is compensating for the temperature change.  I need to maintain my body heat, and being outdoors when it is chilly will force my body to work to increase my body temps.  That isn’t rocket science is it?

So as winter continues make sure you take care of yourself. Walk when you can, eat healthy foods, think about that condiment we were talking about earlier and spend some quality time outdoors in the cold.
