I read this over at WHYY’s Newsworks.
How smart is your electric meter? Pennsylvania is requiring the state’s major utilities to install new, techy meters in the place of those old, impossible-to-read dinosaurs that cling to the sides of our houses. The state hopes to paint a more detailed picture of how and when we’re using energy. Utilities think that being more transparent about energy use could encourage customers to conserve and consume smarter.
Well, that was quick! This afternoon a gentleman came into my home and installed the new meter. It’s a bit larger than the last one. And he didn’t say a thing about what the new meter will allow me to see, but it’s in. I guess we’ll hear more about how to use these meters soon…or not 🙂
